A launch event for the new book, A History of Jewish Youngstown and the Steel Valley, co-authored by locals Tom Welsh, Joshua Foster, and Gordon F. Morgan Jr. in collaboration with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, is scheduled for Sunday, June 4, at 10:30 am at Ohev Tzedek. The book is based on historical accounts, archival data, and interviews with members of the Jewish community in and around Youngstown. Tom will be presenting the book and will be available after for discussion and book signing. Please RSVP to the Ohev Tzedek office by Wednesday, May 31.
Let’s bring in summer with a Kabbalat Shabbat service and potluck at Boardman Park’s Chester Long Pavilion on Friday, June 16 at 6 pm. Bring your favorite vegetarian/dairy dish to share. Please RSVP to the office by Friday, June 9, to let us know what you will be bringing. We will meet rain or shine.
If you or a loved one is in need of prayer and healing, please call in to the office to ensure that all names are included on the mi she’beirach list. Likewise, if you or a loved one is in a hospital, nursing home, rehab facility, etc. and in need of a pastoral visit, please call the office so we can make arrangements. If you or your loved one is no longer in need of prayer, please also call in to the office so that we can remove the name from our lists.
The Amidah — Using Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman’s excellent volume in the My People’s Prayer Book series as a guide, we will explore this core prayer to discuss tefilla, Jewish prayer, as a whole, and how Jews have ever understood our ongoing, evolving relationship with G-d. This class meets Monday nights at 7 pm.
Star Shlep: The Next Generation — Using Jewish science fiction/fantasy as the starship, we will explore the farthest reaches of the galaxy of issues of Jewish identity, survival, and development. We are currently reading The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. There is still time to join the class for our next novel, Snow in August by Pete Hamill, scheduled to begin at the beginning of June. This class will continue to meet Thursday nights at 7.
