This Week and Upcoming

Dear Ohev Tzedek Congregants and Friends:

Shabbat services (Torah portion: Vayera) will begin at 9:45 am. The Kiddush luncheon following services has been sponsored by Barbara Goldberg in memory of her father, Herman Lefsky.

Join us for a Kabbalat Shabbat service and potluck! We will meet in Boardman Park’s Elton Beard Family Cabin at 6 pm on Friday, November 17. All are welcome! Please bring your favorite vegetarian/dairy dish to share. Please RSVP to the Ohev Tzedek office by Thursday, November 16, and let us know what you will be bringing.

Rodef Sholom will be hosting a stained glass concert, featuring the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Randall Craig Fleisher), on Sunday, November 5, at 2 pm. Refreshments provided by the Sisterhood will follow the concert in Strouss Hall. All are welcome – no admission.

Budapest and Its Jewish Community: Wednesday, November 8, 5-6:30 pm. JCC Multi-Purpose Room. $10/person. Join us for an evening to learn about the emerging Jewish community in Budapest, Hungary. Guests Sara Ozorai and Heidi Pusztai will share their Jewish journeys including learning about and embracing their Judaism as adults.

Amish vs. Chasidic: A Research Review: Tuesday, November 14, 6-8 pm. JCC Multi-Purpose Room. Amish and Chasidic (Ultra-Orthodox) people both practice a very unique and old-fashioned lifestyle. Join us as Dr. Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar discusses her unique sociological research comparing the two communities. The event is free and open to the public. A light dinner will be served.

This year, the community Hanukkah party will be hosted by Rodef Sholom on the first night of Hanukkah (Tuesday, December 12) at 6 pm. All area temples will be participating in this year’s celebration, which will feature a gourmet salad bar and latkes from all three synagogues, musical entertainment, a children’s program by Gon and Shai Erez (our Israeli schlichim), and the annual World Series of Dreidel! Please RSVP to the Ohev Tzedek office by Monday, December 11; we will then forward all of OT’s reservation info to Rodef.

Join us Monday, December 25, at 11 am for the Ohev Tzedek tradition of a typical Jewish December 25: movies and Chinese food!  We will again be showing two movies: A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum, featuring Jewish comedians in two lead roles (Zero Mostel and Phil Silvers), and The Nutty Professor, to honor the passing of comedy legend Jerry Lee Lewis. Stick around between showings for a special lunch of house-made Chinese, prepared by our own Chef Art Einzig. Lunch will be served at 12:30 pm. Movie admission is free, but a minimal fee will be charged for the meal (menu and price TBD). Please RSVP to the office by Monday, December 18.

Movie & Lunch BunchFlorence Foster Jenkins: Wednesday, November 8, 12-2:30 pm. JCC Multi-Purpose Room. $8/member, $11/non-member. In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he’s facing his greatest challenge yet.

Volunteers are needed for the annual JCC gift wrap fundraiser at the Southern Park Mall Sunday, December 17, through Sunday, December 24. Multiple shifts are available. Register at jccyoungstown.org/volunteer
